Airlines have some of the most complex data warehouses in the world. They rely on real-time data to make mission-critical decisions about flight operations, safety, maintenance, and customer experience. To keep up with the competition, airlines are modernizing their data warehouses to take advantage of cloud computing.

Recently, Datometry partnered with Lufthansa to help the company rapidly modernize its data warehouse from on-premises to Microsoft Azure Synapse. With this data virtualization project, Lufthansa is taking advantage of Datometry’s unique ability to natively migrate existing SQL Server applications to Azure without costly rewrites.

The Datometry Hyper-Q virtualization platform is the first to provide full interoperability between databases and applications, allowing Lufthansa Group to migrate to the cloud without disrupting current business processes.

Furthermore, Lufthansa aims to upgrade its analytical data processing with a contemporary cloud data warehouse's performance and flexibility while "preserving long-standing investments in application development and business processes."

Before choosing Datometry, Lufthansa evaluated several approaches for modernizing its data warehouse. The company’s decision was based on Datometry’s ability to provide a seamless migration path, native performance, and cost savings.

“We chose Datometry for their powerful value proposition and commitment to a strong partnership,” said Mirco Bharpalania, senior director for data, analytics, and integration, Lufthansa Group. “We look forward to accelerating the transformation of our data warehouse infrastructure as part of our data and cloud strategy. We have been impressed by the power of the Datometry Hyper-Q product during both the selection process and the early project implementation.”

“We’re excited to assist Lufthansa, one of the most iconic brands in aviation, in their transformation to become cloud-native,” said Mike Waas, chief executive officer at Datometry. “Lufthansa joins a rapidly growing cohort of industry leaders that leverage Datometry’s database virtualization as they unlock the benefits of the cloud for their organization.”

Data virtualization and the aviation sector

Data virtualization has been widely recognized as a critical cloud data warehouse modernization technology. It allows companies to decouple their data from the underlying infrastructure, making it much easier and faster to migrate to the cloud.

When done right, data virtualization can provide performance on par with or even better than native databases. In addition, it can help companies save money by reducing the need for expensive hardware and software licenses.

Airlines, for example, can use data virtualization to quickly and easily move their data to the cloud without worrying about complex application dependencies. These dependencies can often make traditional data migration approaches impractical or even impossible, costing airlines both time and money.
