GovTech Continues Push to Deepen Data Skills in Singapore’s Public Service

The Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) will continue to train and deepen the capabilities of public officers in data analytics and visualization. This will empower more public officers to make data-driven decisions that accelerate the country’s Smart Nation initiative.

GovTech is the lead agency driving Smart Nation initiative and public sector digital transformation in Singapore. It also develops the Singapore Government’s capabilities in areas such as data science, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure.

Industry partnerships

The partnership with analytics platform Tableau Software was renewed, while business intelligence company Qlik was also added this year as a partner towards this endeavor.

Tableau had worked with GovTech since 2017 to upskill public officers and deepen visual analytics capabilities within the public service. Thousands of public officers have since been trained with visual analytics skills. The new agreement will see Tableau and GovTech engage in knowledge sharing of resources, industry best practices, and tools to continue strengthening the abilities of public officers within the government.

“We are pleased to once again partner with Tableau to deepen our public officers’ capabilities in data analytics and visualization. This collaboration will support us in building a digitally ready and data-literate workforce to transform public service delivery. These skills could not have been more timely for the public service as we focus our efforts to help businesses and citizens tide over the global pandemic and accelerate the recovery of the Singapore economy,” said GovTech chief executive Kok Ping Soon.

“Our partnership with GovTech over the last three years has made an impact on public officers’ data literacy and ultimately, the ability to deliver better services for citizens by leveraging a data-driven approach. Data continues to be central to Singapore’s Smart Nation vision, and GovTech recognizes the importance of building a data literate workforce to achieve this,” said JY Pook, who is SVP of Asia Pacific & Japan at Tableau.

A new three-year Memorandum of Intent (MOI) was signed with Qlik, which will also be a part of the Data Arcade Tournament. This is an annual visual analytics competition by GovTech that offers a platform for public officers to create innovative, data-driven solutions to solve real-world challenges.

“Qlik empowers organizations and individuals to lead with data. Our partnership with GovTech helps ensure that government organizations are taking full advantage of data and technology to build a Smart Nation that can encourage digitalization across industries and bolster economic growth,” said Geoff Thomas, the APAC SVP at Qlik.
