Databricks Expands Availability on Google Cloud

Data and AI firm Databricks today announced the expanded availability of Databricks on Google Cloud for customers across the Asia Pacific (APAC).

Specifically, it will be available on Google Cloud’s Singapore and Sydney regions, with the former opening the door for organizations in Southeast Asia to create a “data lakehouse” to meet data science and analytics requirements on Google Cloud.

Databricks had previously claimed that its data lakehouse architecture built on open data lakes can deliver better data warehousing performance than traditional data warehouses built using proprietary data formats.

Databricks on Google Cloud is integrated with multiple Google Cloud services, including Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), Google Big Query, Looker, Google Cloud Storage and Pub/Sub for freedom to give users maximum flexibility and preferred choice of data analytics service.

The expansion means businesses across Southeast Asia and Australia can now extend their Databricks lakehouse capabilities and cross-leverage Google BigQuery for analytics to meet their analytics use cases.

Databricks cited hundreds of customers across every industry that currently leverage its Lakehouse platform on Google Cloud, just over a year after the launch of the partnership at the beginning of last year.

The Southeast Asia expansion is a reflection of growing demand from customers looking to adopt an open, modern lakehouse architecture and accelerate their cloud data strategy, says Databricks.

“Databricks continues to make significant investments in building our local capabilities in Singapore to meet the future needs of Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing data and AI communities,” said Andrew Martin, head of South Asia at Databricks.

“From fast-growing digital natives to large global enterprises, we continue to see incredible demand across the region. We are excited to work with Google to help accelerate our customers’ data and AI journey in this region together.”

Junjun Olympia, the head of product and platform engineering of True Analytics, part of the True Digital Group in Thailand, says Databricks on Google Cloud allowed its data engineers, data scientists, and analysts to quickly consolidate, collaborate, analyze, and use its global data for experimentation and innovation.

“Finding valuable insights from massive amounts of data is essential for creating world-class B2B products and services that delight our customers in [the] Asia Pacific… We’re excited to see leaders like Google Cloud and Databricks come together to streamline and simplify getting value from data,” he said.
