Cloud computing is now ubiquitous in the business world and is increasingly used to power many critical applications across various sectors. However, the next frontier for cloud computing is using edge computing technologies. This is something that Singapore-based telecommunications provider StarHub has recognized and is now investing in through an extensive partnership with the world-leading cloud computing provider, Nokia.
With its reputation as one of the world's smartest cities, Singapore is the perfect place for StarHub to launch its latest initiative, the carrier deems. The partnership, made possible through Google Cloud Distributed Edge (GDC Edge), will allow StarHub to launch the next phase of its 5G network, which will transition to cloud-based edge networks.
This pilot program will provide high-bandwidth, low-latency connections at the network's edge to businesses of all sizes, prioritizing energy efficiency to lower costs and reduce carbon emissions. According to Google, GDC Edge will create a multi-access cloud core network that can scale, allowing StarHub to run critical network functions quickly and securely.
This combination of 5G, the cloud, and edge computing has the potential to revolutionize industries. Manufacturers can optimize product development using 5G and the cloud, while retail and hospitality companies can streamline supply chains and improve customer experiences. Transportation infrastructure can support a future with autonomous vehicles through connected technology.
By leveraging Google Cloud's data management, artificial intelligence, and machine learning tools, StarHub can enhance customer interactions and streamline its core communications systems, building trust and loyalty with commercial clients.
Furthermore, the partnership is also expected to provide upskilling opportunities to StarHub's technical teams, equipping them with cloud-native architecture and practices certifications. They will also be better prepared to tackle the carrier's go-to-market strategy for cloud-managed services.
“As we lift our 5G network to the cloud, we believe our collaboration with Google Cloud and Nokia will better enable us to improve the experience for our subscribers and help industry leaders reimagine their businesses for the future,” said Ayush Sharma, chief technology officer at StarHub to ChannelAsia.
“StarHub’s commitment to cloud-native network transformation has raised the bar for telecommunication companies in the region,” said Adaire Fox-Martin, president, Go-to-Market, Google Cloud.
“Combined with Google Cloud’s global scale and the capabilities of our leading data analytics, AI, and ML technologies, StarHub’s next-generation network is built for faster innovation, efficiency, and scale for the benefit of its enterprise customers and more," he added.
